Worth

On May 2-3rd the Texas Chapter of the National MS Society hosted their BikeMS ride in DFW metro area. The ride covers 160 miles over two days starting in Frisco, TX (a northern suburb of Dallas) and a planned finish in downtown Ft. Worth, TX with an overnight break point at Texas Motor Speedway (TMS). This year, due to the swine flu situation, we were not allowed to finish in Ft. Worth (no public gatherings allowed in Tarrant County!) so our course for Day 2 was altered to start and finish at TMS. Day 1 consisted of 85 miles. This year's total ridership was around 3,000 cyclists. Great weather if you finished ahead of the storms that rolled in from Oklahoma. For me, 85 miles covered in 4 hours, 38 minutes at 18.7 mph average. Solid day of riding, so I was very pleased with my time!

To get ready, I trained (cycled) 2-3 days per week starting in mid-March. On days when I could not get out to ride, I would try to run 3-4 miles. Threw in a few 5k's just to mix things up! Strength training at least 2x per week as well.

If you have the opportunity, ride one of the MS rides in your area. They do a fantastic job of supporting the riders with their SAG vehicles and rest stop volunteers. You also get a wide range of rider levels so there is usually someone along side you to ride with at whatever pace you happen to keep.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://swperryman.blogspot.com/2009/05/sams-club-ms150-frisco-to-ft-worth.html' title='Sam's Club MS150 Frisco to Ft.
